DIY Diaper Changing Pad Cover

Diaper Changing Pad

It seems that everyone around me is having a baby or, like me, just had one.  Now I’m all about registries, you can’t go wrong with giving the Mama-To-Be something she’s actually asked for.  However, I also like giving something that’s a little personalized.  That’s why this easy to sew diaper pad changing cover has been my go-to personal touch for all my Mama friends.

3 reasons why I love it so much:

  1.  It’s easy!  I’m no sewing genius so if I can do it so can you.
  2. If you do it right you can create one of these for a LOT LESS $$$ than buying one.  This one I made for only $3.25
  3. Because you choose the fabric you can create something completely original.

So get out your sewing machines and follow along on this super easy tutorial.

Note:  this cover fits a standard changing pad (32”L x 16” W x  ¾” H)

1.  Wash and cut your fabric.  I’ve found that I enjoy using flannel or terry cloth, however, a minkee dot or fleece would be soft on baby’s backside as well.   Dimensions of the fabric should be 48”L x 32”W.

2.Draw an 8” square in each corner of the fabric and cut them out.
3.  Now bring the 2 sides of a square together, right sides or the fabric facing each other and sew them together on all four corners.  When you’re done with this step it will look something like this.
4.  Next, on the inside edge that’s raw fold it over ½” (or so) and iron all the way around.  Then fold it over another inch and iron a pretty slick crease again.  (This is the tube for the elastic)
5.  You’ll want to start sewing next to a corner and continue all the way around with a simple straight stitch.  Remember, once you’ve gotten all the way around to leave a small opening where you’ll thread the elastic through.
6.  Cut a 48” piece of elastic (5/8” or smaller).  Attach a safety pin to one end of the elastic and attach another pin to the other end pinning it to the pad cover.
7.  Use the free end of the elastic and feed it through the tube.
8.  When you pull it out be sure to stitch the two ends of the elastic together with a simple needle and thread and then stitch up the opening of the cover.
9.  You’re done, here’s what it should look like from the bottom and top.

Like I said, easy squeezy (done in less than 45 min) and if I can do it then you can too!  With Christmas just around the corner this would make a great gift.  Happy Sewing!
