We Love Our Teachers!!!

1

It’s National Teacher Appreciation Week.  Have you hugged your kid’s teacher?  Have you at least thanked them for their time, energy, attention, care, and, well…love that they give your kids each and every day?

We here at BVTMB wanted to acknowledge the teachers in OUR kid’s lives.  Give them a little blog shout out to show them how much we care.   Below, a few of our writers decided to share their thoughts about the teachers in their lives and their kid’s lives.  To them we say thank you, and to those of you hard working teachers not mentioned (and there are so many of you) we thank you and are deeply grateful for you too!

How do I feel about teachers? My kids come home from school every day smarter than when they left me, not to mention more tired. For those two reasons alone (although there are so very many more), I am a firm believer that teachers should be millionaires and us their humble servants. Kidding aside, we’ve always been blessed to have amazing teachers in our lives. I can’t imagine what our lives would be like without them and I am grateful for their dedication to our communities. Sometimes I get jealous that the teachers are spending so many hours a day with my boys, but when they show me what they’ve learned academically, emotionally, and socially, I feel so blessed to know that someone cares for my children as though they were their own. Teachers, you are my heroes, and I am your forever grateful servant.

Xander did not take well to being enrolled in a preschool program. For months he clung to my neck and screamed at drop off. I felt like I was torturing him. But we both got lucky with his teachers. They immediately started setting out games specifically for Xander to see when he came in the door. And, if that didn’t do the trick, one of them would scoop him up for a little extra love before he settled down. Now he races ahead of John at drop off, barely pausing to wave goodbye, and he spends the entire car ride home chatting about his projects and friends. I could not have asked for a better experience for his first time at school. The extra TLC he’s gotten has helped him thrive much more than I could have ever hoped.

I showed up at the preschool interview with a two page questionnaire.  I’m actually not that kind of person, you know, the one who has given serious thought to all decisions she makes for her kids.  In fact, the decision to put Jude in preschool stole over me not long before that interview when I found out that, well, kids go to preschool.  I went in feeling like I would probably run out of there clutching my precious boy and vowing to never leave him anywhere without his mommy.  Now you see the kind of person I am.  But then there was Joann.  She has a gentle way of interacting with the kids.  She gets down on their level and really listens to them.  Kevin and I have even learned from her.  When Jude told us a lie recently, Joann gave some good advice that we have been implementing.  She communicates clearly and values the kids’ feedback, encouraging them to problem solve.  Once I overheard an interaction in which a toy was being fought over and after removing the toy, discussing it with the kids, she reintroduced it and asked them, “now, what should we do with this?”  As someone who has raised children of her own and has for the past twenty plus years been a part of raising numerous others, she is a valued resource for us.  Thank you, Joann, for investing in our son at such an important time of his life!

My personal giftings do not include teaching large numbers of very small children.  All those young impressionable minds soaking up EVERYTHING is very intimidating.  But there are some people out there who do have a way with little ones, who can harness all that crazy energy that is a 4 year old and mold them into bona fide learners.  Teacher Josey and Teacher Meaghan (as my son so calls them) are 2 of those very special teachers.  Aden started preschool with Teacher Josey last year and was blessed enough to return and have her again this year.  In the past year and a half, she along with assistant Teacher Meaghan, have taught my son everything from his ABC’s to his 123’s, from bugs to books, and have spurred on an ever evolving imagination.  I’ve seen Aden mature under their care and guidance.  And while he hasn’t always been the easiest he is always met with kindness, sincerity, and a smile.  On the good days I thank you, on the rough days I thank you more.  As we get ready for Kindergarten next year I feel confident that Aden has been well prepared by you two.  Not only Aden but myself as well.  Thank you for all that you do, because what you do is so very important and so often over looked.

In the end “thank you” doesn’t seem to be enough for all that these dedicated individuals do for our children.  If you’d like, leave a thank you in our comment section for the teacher(s) in your life.
