Why We Made This Selection and Background Knowledge

Claire: Obviously known about the movie for years, but didn’t know it was a book until I came across it in a thrift store a few years ago.

Julie: Same. I knew of the movie and the iconic posters. Confession, I never saw it before though. I also didn’t realize it was a book first, let alone a Truman Capote… In Cold Blood is one of my most favorite books of all time.

Overall Opinion of the Book

Claire: I have not read Evelyn Hugo yet, but this makes me want to. I love TJR but I’m hesitant to read any more of her books because I recently read that she was putting writing on hold, and I get anxious thinking that if i finish her books, I won’t have another to read again. Anyways, I enjoyed the book.

Julie: I found it interesting. It kept my attention but you could definitely tell it was from another time. Not that that’s a bad thing. I suppose I’m saying it’s not really timeless like some other classics are.

Overall Opinion of the Movie

Julie: It was entertaining. I found the characters much more likeable in the movie than they were in the book. Audrey Hepburn is so good. The dresses. THE OUTFITS! I just love all of them.

What really got me with the screen adaptation is the genre switch. I found it really confusing.

Claire: Love it. Love the acting. Love the set, clothes, props, everything.

Before you say which you liked better, did you read the book or listen to the audiobook… because it matters.

Claire: I actually read a traditional, paper book for this episode! I bought it when I came across it in that thrift store.

Julie: I listened to it on Audible. It was narrated by Michael C. Hall (aka Dexter).

Which was better?

Julie: The book

Claire: The movie
