Nurse Gives Behind-the-Scenes Look at New Mother-Baby Unit at Fletcher Allen Health Care

1

Hello to all of the Burlington VT Moms Blog readers!

I am the nurse manager of the mother/baby unit at Fletcher Allen Health Care in Burlington, Vermont, and there is a lot of excitement going on around here that I thought some of you would be interested in!

If you have heard that Fletcher Allen is designing and building a new mother/baby unit, then I am here to officially say that the rumor is true! There is a dedicated multidisciplinary team at Fletcher Allen Health Care that has been working for almost three years on re-designing the existing space on the 7th floor of the Baird building at our Medical Center Campus in Burlington. This will eventually house a modern, spacious, and family-oriented mother/baby unit that is adjacent to the existing birthing center.

The new unit is slated to open in the summer of 2015 and will feature mostly private rooms and bathrooms for moms, babies, and families. The mother/baby staff recognize how important giving families a good start is, and we are excited to continue providing excellent care for the moms and babies of our area in a more private and comfortable space.

With increased privacy, we know that moms and babies will have to be separated less often, private discussions will be able to happen regarding medical and social issues right at the patient’s bedside, and families will be able to spend more quality time together, resting and getting to know their new baby.  We are also planning sleeping space and a comfortable area in the rooms for a support person because we know what a big part you all are to our patients and we want you to feel welcome, too!

The mother/baby staff and I are excited to see all of you come through the new unit either as a visitor or patient. I think you will really like the changes and special touches that we have planned for you!

If you have questions about the project please feel free to send an email to me at [email protected]  and check out the website to find out more about the project and how you can help support the new mother/baby unit. We also have a great video that shares more about the project:

*The BVTMB team is excited to support the Mother Baby Project through our raffle at our BVTMB Family Fun Day this weekend! 100% of the raffle proceeds will go directly to them and the building of this new unit.
