Why We Made this Selection and Background Knowledge

Julie: Not too much. I recognized the title of the book as an Agatha Christie book, but that was about all. Even going into watching the movie, I had no idea who to expect to see.

Claire: Nothing other than knowing it was an Agatha Christie book.

Before you say which you liked better, did you read the book or listen to the audiobook… because it matters.

Julie: I read the book. Paperback.

Claire: I listened to the audiobook. Great narration. It was narrated by David Suchet. He had amazing voices for all the characters. None of them sounded alike. I felt like I was listening to one of those old radio plays.

Overall Opinion of the Book

Julie: It was good. It’s not my go-to genre, but there wasn’t anything about it to dislike. It was also shockingly easy to read for being written in 1937. We’ve read some other older books and had trouble with some of the slang. This felt more modern than Deep Water, for instance, even though it was written before it.

Claire: It wasn’t bad. I was kind of having trouble with it holding my attention, but that stopped once the shooting/murder happened. Then it got better.

Overall Opinion of the Movie

Julie: The movie was not fantastic. The acting was, at times, confusing… were they being serious or trying to spoof a mystery? It was hard to tell at times. The cinematography was gorgeous though. Like, I’ve been searching river boat tours ever since watching it.

Claire: It was okay. Not something I would watch again, though. I kind of got the feeling that some of the actors were trying too hard in it.
