Why We Made this Selection and Background Knowledge
Julie: I saw some previews for it when the show came out and I was interested in watching. While watching, I googled to see if it was based on a book and for some reason I thought the book came out in the ‘80s? So I thought the show must have been changed a lot to fit into a modern-day timeframe. I’m not sure at which point I realized the book was only a few years old, maybe when the Cut article came out?
Claire: Basically nothing. Saw some ads here and there for the show. Didn’t know it was a book until you brought it up.
Before you say which you liked better, did you read the book or listen to the audiobook… because it matters.
Julie: Read on Kindle
Claire: Audiobook narrated by Allyson Ryan. It’s a long one at 14.5 hours, but the narration was on the slower side for me, so I was able to speed it up and it took me about 9 hours. Great narrator.
Overall Opinion of the Book
Julie: It was excellent. One of the best in modern fiction that I’ve read.
Claire: I loved it. It was nice to read something different to mix things up from my usual reading. Parts were repetitive and that kind of started bothering me towards the end, but that’s it.
Overall Opinion of the Show
Julie: I think it’s one of the best limited series I’ve seen in a while. The casting was phenomenal. The acting is great.
Claire: I loved it. Like the book, I think it was a nice change for me. No complaints.
Which was better?
Julie: The book
Claire: The book
