Jr. Iron Chef (Essex Junction)

VT FEED and the Burlington School Food project are presenting the  annual Jr. Iron Chef Contest.

The event takes place at the Champlain Valley expo from 9 am to 3:30 pm where teams of 3-5 students in 2 categories—Middle School (grades 6-8) and High School (9-12) will create one delicious dish using seasonal, local foods, which can be easily prepared for school food service menus. Each team’s dish will then be judged by a group of celebrity judges to determine who will be Vermont’s future Jr. Iron Chefs!

The Jr. Iron Chef event will offer activities for the whole family, including cooking demos, food vendors, a get-to-know your farmers’ market, a raffle of great prizes, and celebrity guests!

Cost: Tickets on sale at the door: $3/individual | $5/family | under 3 free

Instrument Petting Zoo (Milton)

This is a great opportunity for children and adults to try out familiar instruments and meet new ones from other cultures such drums, guitars, kazoos, maracas, recorders, thumb pianos, tin whistles, ukuleles, autoharps, fiddles, hammer dulcimers, a steel pan drum and more. Following a brief introduction, there will be plenty of time to explore!

They will have a collection of instruments located in the community room at the town offices that are meant for exploring – the signs say ‘please touch the instruments’ and they mean it.

Cost: Free

Bach in the Subways Day (Burlington)

A 330th birthday celebration for Johann Sebastian Bach will be held at the Burlington Town Center mall on March 21, 2015 as part of the international “Bach in the Subways Day” celebration.

The Burlington Chamber Orchestra is coordinating this Bach in the Subways Day celebration from 10 am – 4 pm on March 21st.  Music by Johann Sebastian Bach will be performed in several locations within the mall by the Burlington Chamber Orchestra, Counterpoint, Vermont Suzuki Violins, and other Burlington area musical groups.

Every year on March 21, Johann Sebastian Bach’s birthday, musicians around the world celebrate Bach in the Subways Day by offering performances in subways, public spaces, and concerts open to all. The music is given freely as a gift, and as an enticement to further explore classical music.

This year there will be an estimated 128 cities and 38 countries participating in Bach in the Subways Day. This celebration has grown from 45 musicians in five cities in 2013 to 77 musicians in 8 U.S. cities in 2014. 1. Very busy weekend!
Here’s something to add. The public library in South Burlington has a free concert at 2:00 this Sunday. It’s jazz with a group that performs and educates about jazz and improvisation. The trio is The IfCM Collective ([email protected]). The library opens the children’s room too. The library is on Dorset Street inside the high school – you can use the parking lot between the middle school and the high school for easy access. Refreshments follow the concert.
