I have always feared Black Friday. It’s not that I don’t love a good deal, in fact I looooooove a good deal. But the idea of waking up at 4am and standing in lines for hours and then fighting over the last big deal is terrifying. It’s makes my extrovert self turn into the biggest introvert I know.

I always feel a tinge of regret from “missing out” but I also think about my family, most importantly my mom. Growing up in New Jersey my family had a small retail chain called RJ Mars. Over the years I have watched as the stores slowly closed from 4 to now 1 and how difficult it has been to maintain a local business while our economy has grown. Her little store still stands, and Black Friday continues to be both a great day and a stressful day for my mom and many other small business owners in our country. Of course, there is still small business Saturday, but we all need to do more, to support our neighbors. Though shopping local is sometimes way more expensive which makes it harder to afford during the holidays. 

In 2015, $67.6 billion was spent on Black Friday.

Now imagine what the impact would be if we spent even 1% of that on our local businesses. That would be $676 million dollars! That’s why for the fourth year in a row, BurlingtonVT Moms Blog and Try Vermont First have teamed up to bring you ShopVT, a site dedicated to promoting local businesses in Vermont. Our goal is not to just generate awareness, but to also incentive and promote our local economy through a series of amazing giveaways (you know how we love those)!
