One of my favorite things to do is peruse through a great bookstore on a leisurely afternoon. I love the idea of a wealth of information being at your fingertips as you scan shelf after shelf of intriguing titles. What I love even more, now that I am a mommy, is a bookstore with a great children’s section, and the downtown Burlington location of Phoenix books has exactly that! Their whole bottom floor is dedicated to children’s books, toys, and family resources!
Phoenix Books was established in 2007 on the principles of social responsibility, community, and sustainability, and is a proud member of Local First Vermont and Vermont Businesses for Social Responsibility. Phoenix Books Burlington and Phoenix Books Essex are locally-owned, independent bookstores, which we love! Their Essex location also houses a gallery and cafe. Whenever possible, Phoenix Books sources eco-friendly products from Fair Trade/Green Certified companies.
While the original store is found in Essex, there is now a Phoenix Books in downtown Burlington, as I mentioned above. The new store – which is twice the size of Phoenix Books’ Essex location – carries 25,000 volumes of new books, with an emphasis on local authors, an extensive children’s department with educational games and toys, as well as cards, stationery and gift items. Digital offerings include eBooks and website ordering with access to hundreds of thousands of titles.Phoenix Books Burlington, like its parent in Essex, offers local author events, innovative children’s activities, and community-generated programs of speakers and issue talks that are relevant to current events and to new books. “Phoenix Books Burlington will not only be a vibrant bookstore, but a community resource and an integral member of the business community,” DeSanto said.
