In this episode of But The Book Was Better, Claire and Julie each share five upcoming screen adaptations they can’t wait to see!

What 2024 screen adaptations are you looking forward to? What book do you wish would be made into a movie or series?

Reading List:

  • Mr. And Mrs. American Pie by Juliet McDaniel – Starting  Kristen Wiig, Laura Dern, Allison Janney, Ricky Martin and Carol Burnett. It just came out on Apple TV a couple of weeks ago as Palm Royale. The period comedy is about a Palm Springs socialite who finds out her husband is leaving her for a 22-year-old secretary. Amidst the heartbreak of the bombshell, she decides to apply for the Mrs. American Pie pageant and she’ll have to fake being the matriarch of a family to enter.
  • The Good Daughter by Karin Slaughter – Starring Jessica Biel in a limited series, date TBA. The Quinn sisters, Samantha and Charlotte, have spent the last twenty-eight years trying to piece together the lives that were fractured by a single night of violence.
  • Frankenstein by Mary Shelly – Starring Oscar Isaac and Christopher Waltz. It’s still in production, possibly coming out in late 2024. Dr. Pretorious needs to track down Frankenstein’s monster who is believed to have died in a fire forty years before to continue the experiments of Dr. Frankenstein.
  • Presumed Innocent by Scott Turow – Starting Jake Gyllenhaal, it’s set for a June 14 release on Apple TV as a series. A prosecutor who becomes the prime suspect in the murder of his former lover. It was previously an adaption starring Harrison Ford done over 40 years ago.
  • Lady in the Lake by Laura Lippman – Starring Natalie Portman, David Corenswet, and Moses Ingram. It takes place in 1960s Baltimore, where an unsolved murder pushes housewife and mother Maddie Schwartz to reinvent her life as an investigative journalist and sets her on a collision course with Cleo Sherwood, a hard-working woman juggling motherhood, many jobs and a passionate commitment to advancing Baltimore’s Black progressive agenda.
  • The Talented Mr. Ripley by Patricia Highsmith – Patricia Highsmith also wrote Deep Water. A movie adaptation came out in 1999 with Matt Damon, Jude Law, and Gwenyth Paltrow. This version is just called Ripley and it stars Andrew Scott, Johnny Flynn, and Dakota Fanning. It’s out on Netflix today (the day we’re recording) so you’ll be able to watch it immediately, though I probably have to wait until Friday night to start. It’s 8 episodes on Netflix.
  • It Ends With Us by Colleen Hoover – The much anticipated big-screen adaptation of Colleen Hoover’s novel is set for release on June 21. It’s going to star Blake Lively, Justin Baldoni, and Brandon Sklenar. This casting caused a bit of a stir and when the first pics from filming were released, fans sort of lost it. But I’m definitely still excited to watch.
  • Wicked by Gregory Maguire – It’s the screen adaptation of the Broadway show, which was based on a book by Gregory Maguire. The previews started airing during the Super Bowl and it looks pretty insane. I’m not a musical/broadway girly. But I’ve got to watch to at least see the chemistry between Ariana Grande and Ethan Slater (Spongebob himself) and also, our love, Jonathan Bailey. It’s also got Cynthia Erivo, Michelle Yeoh, and Jeff Goldblum. I believe it’s set for a Fall release.
  • The Perfect Couple by Elin Hilderbrand – This Elin Hilderbrand novel is becoming a miniseries starring Nicole Kidman, Dakota Fanning, and Eve Hewson. The story is classic Hilderbrand. And I’m excited to see Nicole Kidman play Dakota Fanning’s mom. This one comes out late this year.
  • Romancing Mr. Bridgerton by Julia Quinn – This will be season 3 of Bridgerton and follow Colin and Pelelope’s love story. I’m a little nervous about this season because it hasn’t had good buzz around it. I’m still a little bothered we’re not getting Benedict’s story this season.
